Love, Tiffany

I feel so sad at the thought of not seeing my Oupa again, never again being surrounded by his big warm arms. He had his own nicknames for all the cousins, and mine was Tiffy Wiffy. I’m sure all the cousins agree that Oupa passed on his value of family to all of us, from our annual family holidays to family Sunday lunches. I am so grateful to have grown up surrounded by all our extended family.

I remember one Sunday lunch when all the cousins were playing hide and seek at Oupa and Oumie’s house and we kept on setting off the sound sensitive house alarm. Each time Oupa had to call the security company to tell them that it was a false alarm, and he was always so gracious about it. He was so patient with all the little kids around.

I saw that again when I got to spend time at his house with my own family and small children. I feel so fortunate that they each got to form their own special bonds with Oupa, which of course was so easy to do because Oupa was the warmest and most loving person. I know that there are thousands of people that he touched with his kindness and generosity. And I feel so fortunate to have been one who was able to love and be loved by one of the greatest. Oupa, you’ll forever be in our hearts. I’ll have a smidgeon of dessert tonight, in your honour.

Love,
Tiffany
