Love, Jean

Dear Oupa,

I feel like words are inadequate to accurately capture all of my tender feelings for you. Especially when I am not as skilled with them as you were.

When I reflect on our relationship over the entirety of my life, I filled with a deep gratitude. You were so kind and generous and provided countless gifts and opportunities to me. Yet, what I am most grateful for is your example. I can not think of another person whom I wanted to be more like. You were a paragon of love, loyalty, and honor. You were incredibly successful, yet still humble and kind to all. Thank you for that example; it has motivated me to be better and not to dishonor your name or the blood in my veins.

Moving forward, I will cherish that example and many wonderful memories of our time together. I will cherish all the JPB-monogrammed pens, wallets, cuff-links etc. that you handed down to me. I will cherish the letters and emails you wrote me as a missionary, in college, in law school, etc. I often reflect on your words while you were cheering me on through a specifically rigorous set of exams – “You do not bear my name for no reason.”

I miss you terribly. But I look forward to my reunion with you and Oumie. I hope to live my life in a way that when the time comes for us to be reunited, I will be able to hug you and feel proud of what I have become.

Love,
Jean
